Pre-World War I U.S. Army 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Shovel-Bayonet
This is an 1873 Springfield-Trapdoor shovel bayonet. This bayonet was made to fit onto the end of a .45-.70 Springfield Trapdoor, and retains all of the original components and engraving along the base or “grip.” The shovel measures about 11 inches in length and tapers to a point, and the blade and grip have a series of rust marks related to age. Additionally, there is a light pitting along either portion of the blade.
